Single-use plastics like zip-top bags and plastic wrap are everyday items in many kitchens, but there’s a growing consensus that they’re not great for the environment. We think the first step to reducing your own waste is to find ways to use the jars and bags you already have. We covered various foods and vessels with beeswax wraps—including tomatoes, onions, avocados, apples, and bowls ranging from a 4-ounce ramekin to a 2.5-quart mixing bowl. We wrapped the same foods in plastic wrap and zip-top plastic bags, and checked on the foods every day for a week, then compared the results. We cleaned the wraps five times with a sponge, cold water, and natural dish soap, allowing them to dry completely between each wash, to see how they held up.

With the seal completely shut and the bag half full, water dribbled freely out of the corners when turned upside down or placed on its side. When dropped from 3 feet, they split open when dropped at any angle. Silicone products need to go through a curing process that uses either platinum or peroxide as the catalyst. Curing with peroxide is cost-effective but requires fillers that add contaminants and byproducts to the final product .
The Stasher bags were easier to clean than others we tested, and they’re dishwasher-safe. Even though Rateau advised against storing acidic foods like tomato sauce in these bags, we did just that in our tests. Our dishwasher successfully got rid of stains left by tomato sauce we’d stored in the bags over a weekend.

Certain versions of the Stasher bags also stand up, which is convenient for storing liquidy foods like tomato sauce, soup, or beans. The same attributes that make W&P bags ideal for the freezer make it excel at sous vide, too. The chop stayed submerged and didn’t take up much space in the pot, unlike the thicker bags. The Ziploc bag produced the juiciest, most flavorful chop, but the W&P chop was a very close second, making it the best silicone bag for sous vide. After cleaning the bag in the dishwasher, it retained no smell from the fish sauce marinade.
"Just because something is reusable doesn't necessarily make it good for the environment," Lakhan said. "While I understand and appreciate the effort to try to minimize single-use plastics, we have to be very prudent in how we choose to do so." Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times.
The Carry-All set comes with a small, medium, and large bag (9.5 by 8.5 inches, 10 by 12.5 inches, and 11 by 16.5 inches, respectively), each in a different color. You can also buy the drawstring bags in a combo pack that comes with a smartly designed mesh tote with a pocket. These multipurpose, durable bags seal securely and can hold everything from snacks to prepped ingredients to leftovers, and they can go from fridge to freezer. Guidance on social distancing for everyone in the UK, including children, and protecting older people and vulnerable people. This product evaluation is part of Consumer Reports’ Outside the Labs review program, which is separate from our laboratory testing and ratings. The seals are relatively easy to open and shut, and eating straight from the bags is convenient, thanks to the splayed openings, but the bags are not leakproof.
They also all shrank a little after washing and drying, which we expected since they’re cotton, but they were still usable. This set of cotton bags includes mesh and solid options for produce and bulk goods, and each bag has a cord lock and tare weights on its label. The silicone bags were filled with greasy bolognese sauce to assess for staining. The AISHN was the most challenging bag to hand-wash because it doesn’t stay open, the insides stick to each other, and the creases are hard to get into to clean thoroughly.
The Abeego wraps just offered fewer size options at the time of writing, but you could also cut them to size. We talked to Katerina Bogatireva, the founder of package-free store Precycle, and Lauren Singer, the owner of Package Free. Both Bogatireva and Singer have been living minimal-waste lifestyles for many years, and we considered their expert tips and recommendations when making our list of what to test.
The Bee’s Wrap beeswax wraps are pliable and just sticky enough to make it easy to cover foods for storage and transport. The EcoRoots bags are made from unbleached cotton and come in three sizes, with six cotton mesh bags and three solid cotton bags in a pack. The largest size will fit a head of celery, a bunch of kale, a medium-size head of napa cabbage, or an extremely large head of cauliflower. The mesh is fine enough to contain foods like grapes, radishes, or snap peas, and it gives the bags a little more stretch so you can pack more inside them. Getting that first spoonful of food in there is a crapshoot without a supporting hand to brace the bag. After about 1 cup is in there, it can stand on its own more reliably.
It can also be challenging to reach into smaller Stasher bags and may require a bottle brush. It’s difficult to keep these bags airtight, making them less ideal for the freezer and sous vide. After 48 hours, the mango I froze in them had lots of crystals, and the sides of the bags had lots of frost, too. I couldn’t displace all the air in the bag when I sous vide pork chops, but because of the standing bottom, the bag also didn’t tip over or float, so I left the bag standing up in the water bath. The chop turned out dry and flavorless, and the bag retained the smell from the fish sauce marinade even after a run through the dishwasher. The Stasher bags were easy to hand-wash, thanks to the rounded corners, but there are many ridges in the seal that harbor food, which can be a tough task for a sponge to tackle.
We tested the bags for leaks by filling them with water, shaking them, and trying to pop them open by putting pressure on them with our hands. For the silicone bags, we steamed and cooked vegetables sous vide to see whether the bags imparted any flavor and whether they stayed watertight. When it comes to the big problem with plastic waste, many people think of plastic shopping bags.
