Was the Iconic 'Nightmare on Elm Street' House Used Years Prior in 'Halloween'?

nightmare on elm street house

Following the Thompsons' departure from Elm Street, the house was occupied by the Walsh Family; the son of the family, Jesse Walsh, experienced paranormal events relating to Freddy Kruger within the house. He and his friend were lucky enough to find a diary belonging to Nancy inside the house, which explained what he needed to know about Freddy Krueger. Jesse learned that Freddy was initially using him to come into the physical world, in a type of possession manner, so he could kill the children of Elm Street. The House is first introduced in A Nightmare on Elm Street, as the house of Nancy Thompson's family; her friends also lived in the area too. Following the deaths of most of Nancy's friends, her mother, Marge Thompson, placed bars around the house to ensure that Nancy remained "safe". Following the events of the first movie, the Thompsons left Elm Street.

Storyline

The address of the house in the movie was 1428 Elm Street in Springwood, Ohio. While the number remained the same as it is in real life, the true address is actually 1428 N Genesee Ave, Los Angeles, California. The next night, Tina dreams about Freddy again, only this time she isn't so lucky. In her room, Rod wakes up in time to see Tina slashed to death by an invisible force. He runs, and the police — who are headed up by Nancy dad, Donald (John Saxon) — arrest him for Tina's murder.

In order to stay awake, Jesse starts to wander around town at night. It's on one of these nights that he winds up in an S&M bar, where his leather-clad gym coach catches him drinking a beer and takes him back to the school to punish him. (There's a certain subtext throughout the entire film, which may or may not have been intentional.) It's at this point that Jesse experiences his first Freddy possession, and he (they?) slashes his teacher to death in the showers. Entertainment writer also seen in Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, and more. Wes Craven’s surreal, reality-shifting movie, is elmstreets ahead of the stalk’n’slashers with which it’s usually bracketed and launched the phenomenon that is Freddy Krueger.

Filming locations

It served as a stomping ground for Freddy who waits for his victims to dream and would sometimes bring them there; Kristen Parker saw it frequently in her dreams and made a model of it from her dreams. The house in the dreams appears as it would at the time, all boarded up and isolated. Children dressed in white clothes, implied to be some of Freddy's pre-death victims, would usually be seen outside the house playing jump rope and singing the Freddy Krueger jump rope song. (However, in Freddy's Revenge, Angela Walsh jumps rope and sings this song in a dream Jesse has, and she obviously WASN'T one of Freddy's pre-death victims and was very much alive.) Inside the house it's dark and unsettling quiet.

‘Stream’ – Horror Movie from the Team Behind ‘Terrifier’ Sets August Theatrical Release

Nancy gets into Glen's convertible to go to school when the green and red striped top suddenly comes down and locks them in as the car drives uncontrollably down the street. Three girls in white dresses playing jump rope can be heard chanting Krueger's nursery rhyme as Marge is grabbed by Krueger through the front door window. Built in 1919, the house is of traditionalist/modern fusion design, 2,700 sq. By 2006, the house had fallen into noticeable disrepair and was put up for sale.

Speaking of that reboot, it's crazy that we're now going on 13 years of NO Freddy. As with 2009's Friday the 13th reboot, the film didn't light the spark for a new series of movies. Heather plays the part and goes to the Elm Street house, where Demon Freddy has Dylan held captive. With Dylan's help, Heather eventually manages to overpower Demon Freddy and locks him in a furnace, where he burns to death.

And while it made a decent amount at the box office, the film -- which also starred Rooney Mara during a year she was introduced to audiences in a big way with The Social Network -- was panned by critics. Why, it's through the unconscious mind of Alice's unborn child, in utero. Using her son's dreams, Freddy's able to lash out and kill once more in this soft-baked sequel directed by Stephen Hopkins (Highlander, Judgment Night). The lighting was blue and odd, Freddy's makeup was different, and overall the conclusion of Alice's tale fell short of great.

Movies

Things come to a head at Lisa's pool party, where Freddy actually bursts through Jesse's stomach, kills his friend (Robert Rusler), and then goes after everyone at the pool. Lisa tells Freddy that she loves Jesse and kisses him, which prompts Freddy to burst into flames and saves Jesse from certain death. Wes Craven had come off horror successes Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes when he took on the task of writing A Nightmare on Elm Street, but he was by no means in a position of wealth or influence. He'd spent three years without a single paycheck, lost his house and his wife, and had fallen into heavy drug use.

In 2010, a remake was released, also titled A Nightmare on Elm Street, starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger. The film was produced by Michael Bay, directed by Samuel Bayer, and written by the team of Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer. The film was intended as a reboot to the franchise, but plans for a sequel never came to fruition after the film received mostly negative reviews despite being a financial success. Wes Craven himself returned to Lincoln Heights Jail to film scenes for Shocker.

In this third movie, which brings back Langenkamp's Nancy -- though, how much older she's supposed to be, and how much later this film takes place, is never addressed -- Freddy is the perfect blend of scary and silly. It's not the grass roots horror of the first movie nor does it possess the overboard corniness of the later sequels. Freddy squares off against a group of troubled youths who attempt to take the power back in their own dreams and the results deliver one of the best adventures of the franchise. With Freddy on the cusp of superstardom, there was even a hit MTV video for Dokken's "Dream Warriors" song. Wes Craven would also return to co-write Dream Warriors, after passing on Freddy's Revenge, and wouldn't return to the series until New Nightmare in '94. Kris (Katie Cassidy) is the first to remember Freddy in all his child molester glory (because in this version, it's made abundantly clear what Freddy was doing with those kids before the town's parents set him ablaze).

The exterior of the 1919 home was used in Wes Craven’s classic slasher film as the exterior of the fictional 1428 Elm Street in Springwood, Ohio. The Spaulding Square home that featured prominently in the 1984 horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is opening a window for a brief bidding period. Since the Spaulding Square neighborhood has a lack of palm trees and a variety of other vegetation, it gives the streets a classic look, which allows filmmakers to use the area to portray places outside Southern California. Brian Volk-Weiss, creator-director of Netflix’s series “The Movies That Made Us,” recently revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets of the original suburban horror house flick, which spawned a long list of sequels. Built in 1919, the exterior still resembles how the home looked in the film — green shingles with a white base.

After he kills Heather's husband, Demon Freddy goes after Dylan and, according to Wes Craven, the only person who can stop him is Heather ... The "rules" of Freddy and his powers in this movie are shaky, at best, inventing all new things that he can do both in dreams and the real world that are never really revisited afterwards. Freddy's Revenge isn't most fans' favorite though it has been reexamined in recent years for its homoerotic subtext and has become a cult film within the gay horror community.

What is Typography? Elements and Rules for Beginners

what is typography in graphic design

They are critical for ensuring the visual communication is clear and legible, allowing the intended message to be understood by the audience. The appropriate use of color in typography can significantly impact readability and draws attention to the text, while also conveying the tone of the brand message. Just like most other design elements, typography should be applied with consistency.

How to choose the right typeface for any design project

Now we’ve explained the difference between a typeface and a font, let’s explore the concept of typefaces even further. In the drop-down menu, you can select your typeface—Helvetica Neue, Arial, Roboto, and so on. Click the arrow next to the typeface and you can select your font—light, normal, bold, etc.

How can the BA Graphic Design support your career?

Hierarchy can be created using sizing, color, contrast, and alignment. Alignment is the process of unifying and composing text, graphics, and images to ensure equal space, size, and distance between each element. Keeping your typefaces consistent is key to avoiding a confusing and messy interface. To keep the interface uncluttered and streamlined, a good designer will never use more than three fonts—and keep decorative fonts to a minimum. Eye-catching type is much more persuasive than weak fonts that don’t reinforce the message of the text.

1. Fonts and typefaces

It's an essential read if you're considering venturing into type design yourself. Just like personality, typography can also convey the tone and mood of your graphic design. You can convey the values of your brand with the use of this art without stating them anywhere explicitly. A modern, lightweight sans serif font, for example, can be used for a brand that values minimalism.

What to read next

The adjustment of space made between the letters is known as tracking. A particular set of glyphs or sorts sharing a common design is known as a typeface. A particular set of glyphs that lies within a typeface is called a font. That means 12 points and 10 points Helvetica are two different types of fonts. Similarly 14 pt Helvetica Light and 14 points Helvetica Bold are also separate fonts as these are of different weights. After analyzing different lettering styles, you should decide whether you need a typeface with serifs or a typeface without serifs.

One point is 1/72 inch, and 12 points make one pica, a unit used to measure column widths. Type sizes can also be measured in inches, millimetres, or pixels. If you are a beginner, you can start with simple grids, to understand how they work first.

what is typography in graphic design

We can also mix up the styles used or the colors or use special characters or different alignments and layouts. They’re typically looped and flowing, just like traditional handwriting. The letters within a script typeface can be connected, semi-connected, or unconnected (a bit like joined-up and unjoined handwriting).

Tracking and kerning

what is typography in graphic design

Graphic designs are meaningless if they aren’t well-equipped with typography. The use of typography elements has an overwhelming presence, especially in text-based designs. For graphic designers, the use of typefaces is crucial to create a message for viewers or the target audience of a brand. In this article, we’ve shared what is typography all about and why graphic designers need to master it. It uses elements such as colour, type, shapes, and images to bring a concept to life and communicate certain messages or ideas. Typography relates to how graphic designers style text within a graphic design project.

Visual hierarchy

Typeface refers to creating the text style such as Arial and Helvetica. Graphic designers use typography to adjust the text within the design. The planned use of typefaces allows the designers to make a design look aesthetic and pleasing. If all the type in a layout looks the same, it can be difficult to know which is the most important information, or what to read first. Size is one key way through which typographers create hierarchy and guide their readers.

In some designs, you might adjust your tracking to create a certain artistic effect. It can also help you fix fonts that are poorly spaced to begin with. A typeface is a design style that includes various characters, while a font is a specific implementation of that style. In simple terms, a typeface represents a font family, while a font refers to specific weights, widths, and styles within that family. Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

They are so powerful and engaging to attract people and talk about your brand. With powerful typography design, brands can easily make their name recognizable in the local area. You should use the exact typography of your brand name in all the brand appearances to know people about your existence. Some brands have got huge popularity by their brand name typeface as they turn it into their brand logo. There’s an art to weaving words into a design without overshadowing or clashing with the other visual elements. It’s called typography, and its importance in graphic design is inarguable.

As you're likely to work on a multitude of digital platforms, this knowledge will ensure your designs are effective and accessible across all devices, a must-have skill for any graphic designer. As a graphic designer, you can change the font, color, and size to adjust the text with surrounding elements and still convey the message you wish to. Therefore, font refers to the widths, weights, and styles of a typeface and a typeface is a family of fonts. All the typefaces come with a different set of font sizes and Graphic designers describe the x-height of every character. The central aims of typography in graphic design include improving legibility and effectively transmitting the message, tone, and sentiment of content. To achieve this, typography must maintain a harmonious balance between its elements.

Generally, the designers create an impactful hierarchy in a design by adding three different levels of typography. The level-one typography is generally the most significant content. This is the one that viewers see the first distinctively visible typographic element in your design. However, if you want to start small and have professional text designs with minimal effort, you can always turn to online graphic maker tools.

Even though all letters seem to be the exact same height, the round shapes are actually slightly bigger. The intersection of the O, for example, with the baseline and cap height is just a single point. While the intersection of the letter E, for example, touches those lines with its full surface.

Typography has been around since the 11th century, however, it existed even before that – as the unique art of creating words in books and magazines without much technology around. Every detail was well-thought, crafted, and carefully carried out. We see it almost everywhere we look – on websites, street signs, food packaging, promotional posters, in the videos we watch, the books we read, and really, just everywhere.

Impeachment rules generally allow the Senate majority to decide how to manage the trial, and Schumer has not said exactly what he will do. House Speaker Mike Johnson will send articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate after Congress returns. (1) The Committee on Homeland Security shall review all Government activities relating to homeland security, including interaction of all departments and agencies with the Department of Homeland Security.

GOP-led House impeaches Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas over border management

But ultimately they cannot block a dismissal if majority Democrats have the votes. South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, has said the Senate needs to hold a full trial at which it can examine the evidence against Mayorkas and come to a conclusion. The House has voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas over the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. (2) In addition, the Committee shall review and study on a primary and continuing basis all Government activities, programs, and organizations related to homeland security that fall within its primary legislative jurisdiction.

The panel swiftly held a pair of hearings in January before announcing the two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who is facing a tough reelection bid in Ohio, called the impeachment trial a “distraction,” arguing that Republicans should instead support a bipartisan border compromise they scuttled earlier this year. At a news conference with a group of Republican senators after the articles were delivered, the impeachment managers demanded that Schumer move forward with their case.

The impeachment charges against Mayorkas come as border security is fast becoming a top political issue in the 2024 election, a particularly potent line of attack being leveled at President Joe Biden by Republicans, led by the party’s front-runner for the presidential nomination, Donald Trump. The House sent two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas to the Senate on Tuesday, forcing a trial on allegations that he has “willfully and systematically” refused to enforce immigration laws. Lankford was briefing House and Senate GOP lawmakers privately Wednesday on the border talks, which hit a setback this week.

Hearing on Impeachment Resolution Against Secretary Mayorkas, Part 2

With Democrats united against the charges, the Republicans needed almost every vote from their slim majority to approve the articles of impeachment. But impeaching a Cabinet secretary is rare, having only happened once before in the nation’s history when the House impeached Defense Secretary William Belknap in 1876 over receiving kickbacks in government contracts. Going after an official for a policy dispute, in this instance over the claim that Mayorkas is not upholding immigration laws, is unprecedented.

The committee was made permanent when it was elevated to standing status by a vote of the House of Representatives on January 4, 2005, on the opening day of the 109th Congress, again with Rep. Chris Cox as its first permanent chairman. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi was the committee's first permanent ranking member. After Chairman Cox resigned from Congress in July 2005 to become the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Rep. Peter King of New York served as chairman for the remainder of the 109th Congress. This is an unprecedented failure by the Senate to do its duty, which, for the first time in our history, has outright refused to conduct an impeachment trial when given the opportunity to do so. In light of this, Chairman Arrington and Representative Bergman’s letter to GAO asked if the Biden Administration violated the law by blocking the use of funds intended to continue the construction of border barriers.

The House panel has been circling Mayorkas all year, at times expected to lurch ahead with impeachment proceedings against him as the border crossings hit record highs, topping 10,000 on some days. Republicans in both chambers are eager to put the issue of border security front and center during this election year. President Biden's handling of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border remains a weak spot politically for him, according to recent public opinion polls. The U.S. Senate has rejected both articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, swiftly ending the trial triggered by the House's narrow vote to impeach in February. An official Senate photograph shows senators taking the oath at the start of the impeachment trial on Wednesday. The Committee on Homeland Security under Chairman Green had been investigating the secretary for much of the past year, including probing the flow of deadly fentanyl into the U.S.

Following the hearing, members of the Committee, who were designated as impeachment managers, delivered two articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas from the House of Representatives to the Senate. –– This week, the House Committee on Homeland Security, led by Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN), held a hearing to examine the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) woefully inadequate Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget request. The Committee received testimony from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who made his first appearance before the Committee following his historic impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors in February. Not since 1876 has a Cabinet secretary faced impeachment charges and it’s the first time a sitting secretary is being impeached — 148 years ago, Secretary of War William Belknap resigned just before the vote.

"Today's decision by the Senate to reject House Republicans' baseless attacks on Secretary Mayorkas proves definitively that there was no evidence or Constitutional grounds to justify impeachment," said Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg. He said Mayorkas was "probably the least effective and I think most dangerous, in terms of his policy implementations, of any cabinet secretary in the history of the United States." Johnson predicted there would be a "reckoning" over the border issue in the November election. In response, House Oversight Chair Carolyn Maloney and Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson sent a letter Tuesday demanding Cuffari turn over documents and make his staff available to lawmakers or risk facing a potential congressional subpoena.

Another day, another violent criminal in the U.S. because of the Biden Admin's open border.

Many Republicans blame Biden for taking actions to stop construction of the border wall and end the COVID-19 era restrictions that prevented many migrants from entering the U.S. Both policies had been championed by former President Trump, who is now the front-runner for the party’s 2024 presidential nomination. The Biden administration said the Democratic-led Senate made the right call and dismissed Republican efforts to attack Mayorkas unfounded. House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters he was "deeply disappointed" that the Senate dismissed the charges, saying "there should have been a full trial." The Secret Service has since turned over a large number of records and documents to the committee investigating the Capitol insurrection, but only one text message between agents on the day before the attack and as a mob of rioters breached the Capitol building on Jan. 6. The missing texts are also at the center of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, of which Thompson is the chairman.

Unlike other moments in impeachment history, the afternoon’s debate played out to an almost empty chamber, without the fervor or solemnity of past proceedings. The impeachment of Mayorkas landed quickly onto the House agenda after Republican efforts to impeach Biden over the business dealings of his son, Hunter Biden, hit a lull, and the investigation into the Biden family dragged. Record numbers of people have been arriving at the southern border, many fleeing countries around the world, in what Mayorkas calls an era of global migration. Many migrants are claiming asylum and being conditionally released into the U.S., arriving in cities that are underequipped to provide housing and other aid while they await judicial proceedings which can take years to determine whether they may remain. WASHINGTON (AP) — In a dramatic setback, House Republicans failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, forced to shelve a high-profile priority — for now — after a few GOP lawmakers refused to go along with the party’s plan. Single-Subject Research Designs Psychology Research Methods

single subject research design

Sometimes, a researcher may be interested in addressing several issues for one student or a single issue for several students. Once a baseline of behavior has been established (when a consistent pattern emerges with at least three data points), the intervention begins. The researcher continues to plot the frequency of behavior while implementing the intervention of praise. After you have implemented the randomized controlled trial, and then you want to implement the intervention in a more naturalistic setting, it becomes very difficult to do that in a randomized form or at the group level. So again, single-subject design lends itself to more practice-oriented implementation.

Percentage of unprompted questions asked by three participants in baseline, intervention, and generalization sessions using a multiple-baseline, across-participants design. From “Question-asking and collateral language acquisition in children with autism,” by Koegel, Koegel, Green-Hopkins, and Barnes (2010), Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 40, p. 512. SSED studies provide a flexible alternative to traditional group designs in the development and identification of evidence-based practice in the field of communication sciences and disorders. A-B-A-B designs begin with establishing a baseline (A #1) then introduce a new behavior or treatment (B #1). The researcher waits until the participant’s behaviour in one condition becomes fairly consistent from observation to observation before changing conditions. A better role for case studies is description and identification of potential variables to be evaluated in experimental studies.

Abstract

Multiple-probe designs may not be appropriate for behaviors with significant variability because the intermittent probes may not provide sufficient data to demonstrate a functional relationship. If a stable pattern of responding is not clear during the baseline phase with probes, the continuous assessment of a multiple-baseline format may be necessary. Visual analysis of the results supports the effectiveness of the intervention in that there was an immediate change in unprompted question-asking with the implementation of the intervention for all three children, with no overlap between the baseline and intervention phases. As a result, this study provides strong evidence that the question-asking intervention results in increases in collateral question-asking.

Data Analysis

It can be especially telling when a trend changes directions—for example, when an unwanted behavior is increasing during baseline but then begins to decrease with the introduction of the treatment. A third factor is latencyOne factor that is considered in the visual inspection of single-subject data. The time between the change in conditions and the change in the dependent variable., which is the time it takes for the dependent variable to begin changing after a change in conditions. In general, if a change in the dependent variable begins shortly after a change in conditions, this suggests that the treatment was responsible. For example, a researcher might establish a baseline of studying behaviour for a disruptive student (A), then introduce a treatment involving positive attention from the teacher (B), and then switch to a treatment involving mild punishment for not studying (C).

Recall that one problem with that design is that if the dependent variable changes after the treatment is introduced, it is not always clear that the treatment was responsible for the change. It is possible that something else changed at around the same time and that this extraneous variable is responsible for the change in the dependent variable. But if the dependent variable changes with the introduction of the treatment and then changes back with the removal of the treatment, it is much clearer that the treatment (and removal of the treatment) is the cause. But if the dependent variable changes with the introduction of the treatment and then changes back with the removal of the treatment (assuming that the treatment does not create a permanent effect), it is much clearer that the treatment (and removal of the treatment) is the cause.

What Types of Paleontologists Are There?→

The result was that all of the students dramatically increased their time spent on schoolwork and decreased their disruptive behavior during this treatment phase. For example, a student named Robbie originally spent 25% of his time on schoolwork and the other 75% “snapping rubber bands, playing with toys from his pocket, and talking and laughing with peers” (p. 3). During the treatment phase, however, he spent 71% of his time on schoolwork and only 29% on other activities. Finally, when the researchers had the teacher stop giving positive attention, the students all decreased their studying and increased their disruptive behavior. This confirmed that it was, in fact, the positive attention that was responsible for the increase in studying.

Alternating treatments design

It is also unclear from this case study how typical or atypical Anna’s experience was. Regardless of the research design, the line graphs used to illustrate the data contain a set of common elements. In this example, we can see that the frequency of disruptions decreased once praise began. The baseline period is referred to as A and the intervention period is identified as B. Decisions regarding the effect of treatment are then made by comparing an individual’s performance during the treatment, B phase, and the no-treatment. “Anna O.” was the subject of a famous case study used by Freud to illustrate the principles of psychoanalysis.

As with each of the issues discussed in this section, there are advantages and disadvantages to the regression and non-regression methods for determining effect size for SSEDs. Nonregression methods involve simpler hand calculations, map on to visual inspection of the data, and are less biased in the presence of small numbers of observations (Scruggs & Mastropieri, 1998). Regression methods are less sensitive to outliers, control for trend in the data, and may be more sensitive to detecting treatment effects in slope and intercept (Gorman & Allison, 1996).

Further Reading: Components of Single-Subject Designs

The resulting design is similar to a multiple-baseline, across-behaviors design with concurrent training for all behaviors. For example, Conaghan, Singh, Moe, Landrum, and Ellis (1992) assigned a different set of 10 phrases to each of three conditions (directed rehearsal, directed rehearsal plus positive reinforcement, and control). This strategy allowed the researchers to determine whether the acquisition of new signed phrases differed across the three conditions.

The most basic single-subject research design is the reversal design, also called the ABA design. (Note that averaging across participants is less common.) Another approach is to compute the percentage of nonoverlapping data (PND) for each participant (Scruggs & Mastropieri, 2001)[4]. In visually inspecting their data, single-subject researchers take several factors into account. One of them is changes in the levelOne factor that is considered in the visual inspection of single-subject data.

For example, a baseline might be established for the amount of time a child spends reading during his free time at school and during his free time at home. Then a treatment such as positive attention might be introduced first at school and later at home. Again, if the dependent variable changes after the treatment is introduced in each setting, then this gives the researcher confidence that the treatment is, in fact, responsible for the change. A second assumption of single-subject research is that it is important to discover causal relationships through the manipulation of an independent variable, the careful measurement of a dependent variable, and the control of extraneous variables.

This is necessary for the data from the experiment to yield statistically relevant results. This requires the time and resources to not only gather the participants, but to run trials of the experiment on all the subjects to gather all the data. An SSRD allows researchers to quickly design and run their study without having to find so many participants.

In an alternating treatments design, two or more treatments are alternated relatively quickly on a regular schedule. This means plotting individual participants’ data, looking carefully at those plots, and making judgments about whether and to what extent the independent variable had an effect on the dependent variable. The beginning phase of an ABA design which acts as a kind of control condition in which the level of responding before any treatment is introduced. The plotting of individual participants’ data, examining the data, and making judgements about whether and to what extent the independent variable had an effect on the dependent variable. In an alternating treatments design, two or more treatments are alternated relatively quickly on a regular schedule. F. Skinner clarified many of the assumptions underlying single-subject research and refined many of its techniques (Skinner, 1938).

The data from the baseline phase established that the participant did not respond correctly in the absence of the intervention. The data from the alternating treatments phase supported the effectiveness of the directed rehearsal and directed rehearsal plus positive reinforcement conditions compared with the control condition. They also supported the relative effectiveness of the directed rehearsal with reinforcement compared with directed rehearsal alone. Designs such as ABCABC and ABCBCA can be very useful when a researcher wants to examine the effects of two interventions. These designs provide strong internal validity evidence regarding the effectiveness of the interventions.

The person continually off task would have a score of 30 (off task at every second interval for 5 minutes) and the person off task twice for a short time would have a score of 2 (off task only during 2 of the 10 second interval measures. Generally, in single subject research we count the number of times something occurs in a given time period and see if it occurs more or less often in that time period after implementing an intervention. For example, we might measure how many baskets someone makes while shooting for 2 minutes. We might play music while shooting, give encouragement while shooting, or video the person while shooting to see if our intervention influenced the number of shots made. After the 3 baseline measurements (3 sets of 2 minute shooting), we would measure several more times (sets of 2 minute shooting) after the intervention and plot the time points (number of baskets made in 2 minutes for each of the measured time points). Suppose a researcher wished to investigate the effect of praise on reducing disruptive behavior over many days.

The multiple baselines can be for different participants, dependent variables, or settings. But if the dependent variable changes when the treatment is introduced for multiple participants—especially when the treatment is introduced at different times for the different participants—then it is unlikely to be a coincidence. The key to this design is that the treatment is introduced at a different time for each participant. One solution to these problems is to use a multiple-baseline design, which is represented in Figure 10.4. The dependent variable is the patient response, defined as a target behavior that is observable, quantifiable, and a valid indicator of treatment effectiveness.

"Anytime the House would want to just shut the Senate down, they could send over another impeachment resolution." “Your obstruction of the Committees’ investigations is unacceptable, and your justifications for this noncompliance appear to reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of Congress’s authority and your duties as an Inspector General,” Maloney and Thompson wrote in the letter. Johnson, who could afford only a few defections from his ranks, had said earlier he had personally spoken to Gallagher and another GOP holdout, acknowledging the “heavy, heavy” vote as he sought their support. While most Republicans oppose quick dismissal, some have hinted they could vote with Democrats. The Committee was first formed as a Select, non-permanent Committee to provide Congressional oversight over the development of the Department of Homeland Security. The Committee was made permanent when it was designated as a Standing Committee of the House on January 4, 2005, the first day of the 109th Congress.

House Intelligence Committee chair warns of a serious national security threat

As Congress switched parties at the beginning of the 110th Congress, Rep. Thompson became the chairman of the committee and Rep. King the ranking member. House control switched parties again at the beginning of the 112th Congress in 2011, and King again became the chairman, and Thompson the ranking member. As the House switched parties at the beginning of the 116th Congress, Thompson again assumed the chair. The committee continues to operate in a bipartisan manner, passing almost all of its legislation out of the committee unanimously.

What to know about the Mayorkas impeachment and what comes next

Trump as president was twice impeached — first in 2019 on abuse of power over his phone call with the Ukrainian president seeking a favor to dig up dirt on then-rival Biden, and later on the charge of inciting the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol. At one point, Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas, who had missed votes earlier in the day, arrived from the hospital to cast his vote against the impeachment. The three Republicans opposing impeachment were Gallagher, Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado and Tom McClintock of California. Republican Rep. Blake Moore of Utah was the Republican who switched his vote on procedural grounds. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the Mayorkas impeachment vote was a stunt designed by Republicans to sow “chaos and confusion” and appease Trump — rather than to govern.

Library of Congress

When the Secretary attempted to shift the blame to Congress, members reiterated that the Senate has not taken up or passed House Republicans’ H.R.2, the Secure the Border Act, which is the strongest border security legislation passed by Congress in history. If Democrats are unable to dismiss or table the articles, they could follow the precedent of several impeachment trials for federal judges over the last century and hold a vote to create a trial committee that would investigate the charges. While there is sufficient precedent for this approach, Democrats may prefer to end the process completely, especially in a presidential election year when immigration and border security are top issues. The House narrowly voted in February to impeach Mayorkas for his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. House Republicans charged in two articles of impeachment that Mayorkas has not only refused to enforce existing law but also breached the public trust by lying to Congress and saying the border was secure.

Office of the Secretary

Experts have argued that Mayorkas has simply been snared in a policy dispute with Republicans who disapprove of the Biden administration’s approach to the border situation. Even if Republicans are able to impeach Mayorkas, he is not expected to be convicted in a Senate trial since Republican senators have been cool to the effort. The Senate could simply refer the matter to a committee for its own investigation, delaying immediate action.

Hearings

Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. House Republicans have released two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. After Tuesday’s ceremonial procession and presentation of the articles, the proceedings will not begin until Wednesday. Senators will be sworn in as jurors, turning the chamber into the court of impeachment. The Senate will then issue a summons to Mayorkas to inform him of the charges and ask for a written answer. House Republicans are tirelessly working to "Reverse the Curse” of the Democrat agenda, from open border policies to their ambivalence toward the debt crisis. days that rocked USC: How a derailed commencement brought ‘complete disaster’

While the Senate is obligated to hold a trial under the rules of impeachment once the charges are walked across the Capitol, the proceedings may not last long. Democrats are expected to try to dismiss or table the charges later this week before the full arguments get underway. The second select committee was formed in 2003 at the beginning of the 108th Congress as a select committee with Rep. Christopher Cox of California as its chairman and Jim Turner of Texas as its ranking member. The creation of the committee was necessitated by the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. As an executive branch department, the newly formed Department of Homeland Security required congressional counterparts to facilitate legislative action and oversight.

Information about all receipts and expenditures of representatives, committees, leadership, and officers of the House. That’s a question we’ll have to get answered,” said Sen. John Thune, the second-ranking GOP leader in the Senate. During Wednesday’s session, Republicans hammered away at Mayorkas’ performance, saying he’d failed to do his job detaining migrants who didn’t have the right to be in the country and allowed others to remain as they await proceedings. But any goodwill for Mayorkas has not spread to the House, where Republicans are readying their effort to remove him from office. The Homeland Security Committee plans to hold hearings throughout January with the end goal of impeaching Mayorkas.

Office of the Executive Secretary

While the GAO report may show that the Biden Administration has not explicitly broken the law, it does show that DHS and the White House are circumventing the law to shirk executive responsibility and accountability. As per DHS, these massive reductions in illegal immigration are due solely to the construction of physical barriers. The barriers force migrants to go to ports of entry where they can be processed by Customs and Border Protection agents, avoid dangerous cartels, and have the potential to enter the U.S. legally. Senators struggled with certain differences, particularly over parole programs to allow immigrants who claim asylum entry into the U.S. as they await court proceedings. Reaching a border deal is key to a broader funding package for Ukraine, Israel and other national security needs. The Homeland Security Department released a memo noting that Mayorkas and the bipartisan senators are working hard to find “real solutions” to fix broken immigration laws while the House majority is wasting time on “baseless and pointless political attacks” by trying to impeach him. The committee conducts oversight and handles legislation (and resolutions) related to the security of the United States. It also has the power to hold hearings, conduct investigations, and subpoena witnesses.

Eight Republicans voted in November to put off the final Mayorkas impeachment vote by sending it to committee. And some GOP senators have been caught in a political bind as they try to support, but also distance themselves from, their hard-right colleagues. It remains to be seen if the House investigation will convince lawmakers that Mayorkas’ conduct rises to the level of the “high crimes and misdemeanors” the Constitution specifies for impeachment. With the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden, over his son Hunter Biden’s business dealings, lumbering along as lawmakers work to dig up information, the Republicans are sharpening their focus on the border crossings and the investigation of Mayorkas.

In a press conference after the trial, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he felt "very strongly that we had to set a precedent that impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements." "By doing what we just did, we have in effect, ignored the directions of the House, which were to have a trial," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after senators killed the second article. They gave his office until Aug. 23 to provide “all responsive documents” and make personnel available for interviews before lawmakers issue a congressional subpoena.

House Features

Given the lack of decorative touches, look for asymmetry to provide plenty of unique interest in each modern home. Contemporary house plans include the latest trends and popular features people desire right now. This means contemporary house designs are ever-changing because home trends are constantly changing. Today's contemporary homes typically have clean lines, minimal decorative trim, and an open floor plan.

Custom Home Design

Recent trends include frameless, doorless steam showers, rain heads and built-in seating, according to a 2024 trend report by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). We’ve also noticed aromatherapy devices, heated floors and towel warmers to name a few comfortable upgrades. Home design has evolved over time to reflect changes in technology, lifestyle trends, and societal values. Here are a few notable shifts we’ve seen in modern home design that we think will only continue to get more popular in the coming years. Modern kitchen designs prioritize efficiency, storage, and easy movement while using design elements like islands and open shelves to create inviting spaces. Lighting in Modern design is as much about functionality as it is about creating the right atmosphere.

Check out our California style house plans and contact our support team with any questions. Another common type of home found in this region is the Arts and Crafts bungalow, which first became prominent in the early 20th century. These homes are smaller in size and carry over many of the aesthetics of Craftsman homes, only on a more stripped-down scale. These houses often feature offset porches, simple front lawns, and a single story that spreads out the rooms to maximize space.

And since many of your favorite brands are focusing on sustainability, that means that you don’t need to make sacrifices on style or luxury in order to make your space better for the environment. We’ve seen many significant players embrace and innovate on the bidet, from built-in models to attachments, so this luxury accessory can be within reach for more people than ever before. TOTO, a brand known as the manufacturer of the original luxury bidet seat in 1980, has long been in the bidet game but is one of the most prominent brands showcasing a line of bidets varying in features and price today. California style homes are among some of the most diverse and eclectic in terms of style, function, and overall construction method. These homes are as diverse as the state’s many cities, with each region offering different options to suit any homeowner’s needs. At the heart of Modern home design is a harmonious blend of artistry and functionality.

Architect-Designed Modern Homes

Modern home design now often includes integrated systems for lighting, heating, security, and even appliances. These “smart” features allow homeowners to control various aspects of their homes from their phones or voice commands, adding convenience and functionality. From using drought-tolerant plants to installing solar panels, modern design often incorporates sustainable practices that respect the environment and help homeowners reduce their carbon footprint. The principle of “form follows function” posits that the shape and form of an object should be primarily based on its intended purpose or function.

Modern House Plans & Floor Plans

Biophilic elements, or those that help us connect to nature, are a huge trend elsewhere in the home, so it’s no surprise that we’re also seeing these colors and design choices pop up in the bathroom space. The bathroom is one of the most time-consuming rooms to clean, so it probably comes as little surprise that one of the most prominent emerging design trends is touches that focus on cutting down cleaning time. Among the vintage bathroom trends we’re seeing are pendant accents and ornate details on bathtubs and other fixtures. We’ve also seen lighting designed to evoke the look of candlesticks and vintage-inspired colors like teal greens, rosy pinks, brass and gold. From the personal to the bold to focusing on self-care and cutting down on cleaning time, here are some of this year’s biggest bathroom trends.

In Modern design, color palettes lean towards the neutral, but that doesn’t mean they’re boring. Instead, they serve as a blank canvas for striking pieces of furniture, art, and textures to stand out. From the polished gleam of steel to the warmth of natural wood, texture plays a crucial role in adding depth and interest. Koones wrote about the Green Retreat house in “Prefabulous + Almost Off The Grid”, 2012 (pictured above).

A contemporary house plan is an architectural design that emphasizes current home design and construction trends. Contemporary house plans often feature open floor plans, clean lines, and a minimalist aesthetic. They may also incorporate eco-friendly or sustainable features like solar panels or energy-efficient appliances. Today's contemporary plans run the gamut of small or large floor plans with a single story or, perhaps, two or more stories.

However, it's essential to differentiate between "modern" and "contemporary" in the context of architecture. While "modern" refers to a specific architectural movement with defined stylistic features, "contemporary" refers to homes built in the present day, which can showcase a variety of architectural styles. In other words, all modern homes are contemporary (as they were at the time of their construction), but not all contemporary homes are modern. Modern house plans provide a distinctive blend of style, practicality, and forward-thinking design principles.

Modern homes are ideal for view lots due to their oversized windows and open interiors that bring sights deeper inside. Finally, modern house plans have plenty of sleek curb appeal, so they're perfect if you want your home to stand out on the street. Choose a house plan with the bedrooms on the lower level for aging in place, or opt for a band of clerestory windows just below the roof-line to let the light in, yet still allow for privacy. Our designs offer great flexibility in terms of square footage, size, and price. We can help you build a small home on a narrow urban infill lot or a large home on a multi-acre property with panoramic views.

Other great ways to be more sustainable include using natural materials like bamboo, recycled glass or cork as well as low-VOC paints and finishes Oakley suggests. For many designers, this means tapping into fun elements and a sense of personalization. Essentially, if it speaks to you, it can likely have a place in your bathroom design. One of the most significant shifts we’re seeing in the home industry right now is color palettes moving towards warmer, cozier tones, and bathroom design is no exception. Instead of stark whites, designers are incorporating more tans, off-whites, beiges and browns in these spaces.

Large windows invite natural light during the day, while smart, energy-efficient lighting solutions offer various options for setting the right mood in the evenings.
